About Us

The Indianapolis, USA - based American Basketball Association was the dominant league in the United States in the early 1970’s until it was acquired by the National Basketball Association (NBA) in 1976. The top 4 teams of the ABA which included the San Antonio Spurs, the Los Angeles Clippers, Golden State Warriors and the New York Knicks were absorbed by the NBA together with stars such as Julius Erving, David Thompson, Moses Malone and George Gervin.

In the year 2000, one of the ABA’s original founders, Atty. Dick Tinkham, acquired the rights back from the NBA and re-started the league with 9 teams. In the year 2010, the ABA grew to 50 teams across the 50 states of North America with the key cities showcasing its elite teams and named Joe Newman as its CEO.

The league received support from the Singapore-based sports philanthropist Paul Moñozca to enable the league to go global and expand its main event, the ABA World Basketball Cup, it's coverage of ABA Games in the United States together with it's over-all broadcast and merchandising business outside the United States. The ABA Global League was formed and handles all commercial interests of the ABA outside the United States.

Today, the ABA continually uses its trademark red, white and blue ball and has adopted international teams and players from China, Canada, Japan and the Philippines to play side-by-side free agents and veterans in US professional basketball.

As it positions itself as a global league, more and more countries and players are joining the ABA, adopted by key US cities either as a travel team or as a regular season participant.
